Saint Guilhem le Désert – Pont du Diable
A quaint village in the Hérault valley
As we travel on into the Hérault valley, we find Saint-Guilhem the Desert, this village is huddled around the 9th century abbey between the Hérault and the Verdus. This village which marks the entrance to the untamed domain of the gorges and is full of charm with its 11th century church and its alley ways leading to ancient houses. The village of sand stone takes on a magical atmosphere at sunset as the sunlight touches the roofs transforming them to gold.
A few kilometres upstream from the village, the Pont du Diable stretches over the Hérault. This bridge built in the 10th century is one of the oldest in France.
